Twitter’s official statement
Twitter explained its launch as:
"It's quick and easy to add an
emoji reaction to a Direct Message – both text and media attachments. To add a
reaction, hover over the message and click the reaction button (heart and
icon), or double-tap on the message and pick an emoji from the pop-up. You can
undo a reaction at any time and it will be removed from the message for all
participants. Click or tap on a reaction in a conversation to view who reacted
to the message. Additionally, all conversation participants will receive a
notification any time a new reaction is added to a message."

Some important information:
The messaging feature of Twitter was pretty much ignored due
to the presence of other messaging platforms providing more features. This
additional feature can make a friendly environment for users to start texting
on Twitter as well.
Twitter does take into account the version of your (Android
or iOS) app. If it's the older version it will not support message reactions,
they will see the reaction as the text-based message.
Final Words:
Usually, reactions are used to signify that you read the
message. It's really helpful in building connections through messages.
Do share this new feature with your friends.
