In the last 2 decades, book reading habits have changed a lot. Technology has affected the book reading habits a lot. The book reading habits are very less among the young generation. Today I'm going to be highlighting how videos mediums, audio mediums, short articles have played a role in eliminating the book-reading habits. I'll be discussing all the effects of this topic so you can know about different factors which changed our book-reading habits.
“There is no friend as loyal as a book.” ― Ernest Hemingway

Pros & Cons:

Cons:

Lack of reading:

Since the advent of the internet, most people no longer like to read lengthy writing instead they opt for jumping to the specific information they need via highly optimized web search engines such as Google, Bing, etc. As a result, the learning has decreased especially linguistics as a person does not come across different terms which are unknown for that person.

Reading speed:

Despite the fact of specific reading people are reading very less and opting for audio and video resources. Whether we talk about learning or entertainment most people prefer digital media, as a result, the books have lost their importance up to some extent. However, there is no doubt that books are still used for digital content. Its biggest example is TV shows originated from novels and other books.

More association with gadgets as compared to books:

The gadgets are too much famous especially among kids. Today most of the students are focused on getting information as well as entertainment via gadgets like mobiles, tablets, etc. According to research conducted by daily mail in 2013 reported that 29% of the children use tech gadgets as toddlers and 70% completely master them by primary school age. This fact can be used positively in the sense that the kids have learned a lot but unfortunately the side effects on eyes caused by screens at such young age are a negative point for the future of such kids. Providing books and avoiding digital gadgets is very important.

Pros:

·         All the information at your fingertips.
·         Option to read, watch and listen at the same time. (Discussed later).
·         Increased portability. (You can carry books, magazines, etc around easily)
·         Physical Libraries are replaced by Digital Libraries.

What Book medium you should use? (Ebook, audiobook or printed book)

Deciding the medium for reading books is an important step that depends on your available time, budget, etc.
In most cases, an audiobook is more expensive than an ebook and printed version of the same books.
People who purchase ebooks are used to lower prices, sometimes considerably lower prices, than print edition due to no printing cost. Sometimes ebooks cost around $0.99 to $2.99 in deals.
People new to reading and book purchasing often think that audiobooks and ebooks should be costing the same amount but unfortunately, it's not the case. Despite the fact, there is no cost of printing in Audiobooks but there is yet another factor that causes a price hike, that is Narration and Audio recording expenses. An average book/novel contains around 80,000 (80k) words. It is narrated in around 10 hours and narration cost per hour ranges between $100-$500. So book narration by a recognizable voice can easily exceed $4000-$5000. As a result, audiobook typically cost between $20-$30. Whereas paperback edition and ebook are usually less than $20.

Conclusion:

Technology has affected the book readers in positive as well as negative ways. In my opinion, printed books give you the real feel and give you some time away from gadgets and allow you to learn as well as get entertainment however all the mediums of reading are effective. People who are too much busy should consider Audiobooks otherwise ebooks and printed forms of books should be preferred.
