Who Actually won in Apple vs Epic lawsuit?
Who Actually won in Apple vs Epic lawsuit

Introduction

Some time ago Epic complained against Apple's high percentage of commission per app-related transactions whether they're in-app purchases or paid apps. Apple charges a 30% commission per transaction and restricts developers to use Apple payments to work with Appstore and no third-party payment gateway is allowed. Epic recently had come forward with a lawsuit to use third-party payments.

Verdict of the lawsuit:

Court has given its verdict ordering Apple to allow the use of third-party payments in Appstore. This means developers will be able to use third-party payment solutions resulting in no commission to Apple for the app or game-related transactions. This will heavily damage Apple's reportedly $18 billion business.
On the other hand, Epic has been penalized with a $3.6 million fine for breach of contract with Apple. The breached clause restricted Epic to use only Apple Pay as a payment service. Epic in that time using their own payments made roughly $12.2 million and the court charged them with that 30% to be paid to apple.

Who actually won?

Well, the victory is not as obvious as it usually seems. We have to look at the situation in two different scenarios.
  1. If we observe in a short time Epic lost as they're paying $3.6 million to Apple
  2. In a long run, they have actually won. As they're allowed to use third-party payments now they can forever avoid the 30% commission they were paying to Apple.
So, in my opinion, Epic actually won the lawsuit.
